Ellensburg
is a city and the county seat of Kittitas County. Ellensburg has a population of 17,304. The city is located east of the Cascade Mountain range and is home to Central Washington University. Ellensburg hosts a professional rodeo, the largest in Washington State, which is part of the Professional Rodeo Circuit Association. The Kittitas Valley surrounding Ellensburg is internationally known for the timothy-hay that is grown there. Several local hay brokering and processing businesses ship to Pacific Rim countries. Jazz in the Valley is a three day jazz festival celebrating jazz for the community and visitors. Paint Ellensburg is a unique experience as you watch artists paint, sculpture, or carve for 24 hours straight. The Ellensburg Manastash Metric Bicycle Tour is a 62 mile ride that travels through some of the most scenic cycling country where you can view mountain scenes, historic towns, autumn colors, and the Yakima River. The TRIOBA Adventure Race Series is a race that takes place in the Snoqualmie Pass area and challenges the participants' skills in kayaking, trekking, mountain biking, and navigation.

Central Washington , in the heart of the Cascades, has a temperate climate of mild summers and snowy winters. An average winter snowfall ranges from 50 to 75 inches in lower elevations. Snowfall gradually increases to between 400 to 600 inches above 4,000 feet. Some high peaks above 7,000 feet remain snowcapped all year. Snowfall usually begins in the higher elevations in September, gradually working down to 3,000 feet by the last of October. Above 4,000 feet temperatures occasionally drop below freezing even in midsummer. The temperature decreases approximately 3 degrees with each 1,000 feet increase in elevation. Mild, humid, summer days, temps rarely rise above 79 degrees.
