Key-Peninsula
is a "finger" of land in the Puget Sound in northwest Washington. Called "The KP," or "The Key" by locals, it is primarily a rural area, about 16 miles long and extends south from the Kitsap Peninsula. It's west of Gig Harbor and is made up of forested parks and scenic views, agricultural and maritime history. The Key is part of Pierce County and includes the small towns of Longbranch, Lakebay, Home, Vaughn, Key Center and Wauna. Herron Island is a 1.25 mile-long island off the west side of Key Peninsula and accessible by boat and private ferry. The Key Peninsula Museum can be found in the town of Vaughn. Key Peninsula is also home to two state parks: Penrose Point State Park and Joemma Beach State Park. Penrose Point State Park is a 152-acre marine and camping park with over two miles of saltwater frontage on Mayo Cove and Carr Inlet. Wildlife, birds and forested terrain make this a beautiful park. A self-guided interpretive trail called A Touch of Nature is located in the day-use area, and extends for 1/5 mile. The park also has two picnic shelters and 60 unsheltered picnic tables. Joemma Beach State Park is a 122-acre marine camping park with 3,000 feet of saltwater frontage on southeast Kitsap Peninsula. It's an excellent park for fishing, boating and crabbing and provides a boat launch and water trail campsites.

Northwest Washington , near the Puget Sound and San Juan Islands, has a fairly temperate climate. The temperature of the salt water surrounding the islands doesnft vary greatly throughout the seasons, so it helps cool the air surrounding the islands. Northwest Washington experiences frequent cloud cover, fog and drizzle. Misty morning will be followed by partial clearing and occasional showers. An umbrella always comes in handy. Evenings are usually warm with a light ocean breeze. Temperatures range from low 30s in winter to mid 80s in summer. Coastal conditions are generally much more harsh than those in the Puget Sound.
