Twisp
is a small town located in Okanogan County in northern Washington. As of the 2000 census, the population was 928 residents. The town of Twisp lies near the Canadian border at the confluence of the Methow River with the Twisp River. This is a gorgeous area of the country, bordered on the north by the Canadian Okanagan, on the south and east by the Columbia River Basin and Lake Roosevelt and on the west by the 10,000 foot peaks of the Cascade Mountains. The town of Twisp is rural in nature, teeming with wildlife and birdlife and beautiful vistas all around. The area is also dotted with hundreds of lakes, rivers and streams - truly a nature lover's dream. Just some of the recreational activities available include whitewater rafting, fly fishing, boating, hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, horseback riding and backpacking. In the wintertime, there is cross-country and downhill skiing, ice fishing, snowboarding, snowmobiling and dog-sledding. With such natural beauty, it's no wonder that Twisp has become a magnet for a vast array of artists, writers and musicians, as well. Visitors enjoy art galleries, coffee shops, live music and other entertainment, not just in Twisp, but in all the small towns and villages of Okanogan County.

Twisp Weather & Climate

Northeast Washington, near the Canadian border, generally has a humid continental climate. Cold air moving southward through Canada will occasionally cross the higher mountains into northern Washington. Although it receives a lot of rain, summers are quite dry. This region is occasionally subject to unusual and harsh weather due to an upper level trough that drives down cold Arctic air from the Canadian interior. This cold air mass can collide with a Gulf of Alaska cold front and create high winds, ice, snow, or heavy rains. Another weather phenomenon, known as the "Chinook wind," happens in the autumn and winter. Unusually warm and steady wind comes out of the south. It is essentially a reverse "Nor'Easter." A Chinook wind following a northeast wind can melt significant snow accumulations very quickly, pushing drainage systems to their limits.
