Westport
is located on a peninsula on the south side of the entrance to Grays Harbor on the west-central coast of Washington. As of the 2000 census, the population was 2,137. The public Westport Marina is the largest marina on the outer coast of the United State's Pacific Northwest. This marina is home to a large commercial fishing fleet and charter vessels. There are tons of activities to choose from in the Westport area, including miles of beautiful, public beaches to explore and a small aquarium, located at the dock area. At the very end of Neddie Rose Drive in Westport is a scenic boardwalk where you can watch boats and fishermen enter. Charter boat fishing is available for salmon, tuna, and halibut fishing and also whale watching trips. Other things to do include boat basin fishing, clam digging, crabbing, boogie boarding, kite flying on the beach, bicycling, birdwatching, and hiking. In addition to the beaches, there are several day use parks in the area to enjoy. A 2.2-mile dune trail for hiking or biking leads to the Grays Harbor lighthouse. In nearby Grayland are hundreds of acres of cranberry bogs. A self-guided cranberry tour is available and the Furfurd Cranberry Museum in open by appointment. Other attractions in Westport include the John's River Wildlife Area, the Old Whaling Station, and the Westport Maritime Museum.

West-Central Washingtion, along the coast, has mild summers and cold, wet winters. Severe storms hit Washington's coast during the winter, bringing heavy rains, strong winds, and high waves. Storms blow in about 70 to 100 inches of rain per year, the heaviest precipitation in the U.S. Coastal storm winds regularly top 40 miles per hour. During the summer, fog often moves in along Washington's coast. As the Pacific High, an area of high pressure, cools off over the Pacific Ocean, low stratus clouds form. At night, these clouds move inland as fog. This fog often burns off by mid-day, giving way to sunshine and pleasant temperatures.
