Cheney
is a thriving community with a population of 10,130. It is located 17 miles southwest of Spokane, Washington. Cheney was named after Benjamin Pierce Cheney, a Boston railroad tycoon. Its ties to the railroad, education, and agricultural influences helped Cheney develop into the city it is known for today. Cheney is a college town and is home to Eastern Washington University, a public regional university with over 10,000 full time students. The Eastern Washington University campus has two college theaters, an art gallery, and an indoor swimming pool. Also, Eastern Washington University has hosted the Seattle Seahawks for their summer training camps. Cheney benefits with easy access to nearby cities and town which it shares with the Spokane metropolitan area. Cheney has numerous lakes and ski resorts and golf courses within easy driving distance. Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge is five miles south of Cheney and it has dozens of hiking trails and trails for motorized vehicles for viewing wildlife and marine life. In addition, Cheney has seven city parks, an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, five soccer fields and baseball and softball diamonds.

East-central Washington has a humid continental climate. The area, however, has traits of a Mediterranean climate with warm, arid spells during the summer and a cold, somewhat snowy winter. Both summer and winter are the predominant seasons, as fall constitutes a rapid transition. On average, July and August are equally warm, and the coolest month is December. Due to the Cascade Mountains, this region is protected from weather patterns experienced in other parts of the Pacific Northwest. As a result of the modifying effect of the Cascade Mountains, this area also has less than half the rainfall of the western part of the state.
