Spokane
is located in east-central Washington, approximately 110 miles south of the Canadian border and 20 miles from the Idaho border. With a population of 202,319, it is the second largest city in Washington and the third largest in the Pacific Northwest. Neighborhoods in Spokane range from Victorian-era South Hill and Brownes Addition, to the Davenport Arts District of Downtown, to the contemporary neighborhoods of North Spokane. The city is home to 18 neighborhoods recognized on the National Register of Historical Districts, which is the most of any city in the state of Washington. In fact, more than fifty percent of Spokane's downtown is designated as a historic district. Spokane has a vibrant arts scene and hosts a variety of special events throughout the year. There are two major Artwalks (the first Friday of February and October,) a major civic theater and several smaller ones, the Spokane Symphony, a jazz orchestra and opera house. The First Friday Artwalk occurs the first Friday of every month, and the main art districts are located in the Davenport District, the Garland Business District, and East Sprague. The Spokane area also offers an abundance of outdoor activities that can be enjoyed year round, including miles of hiking trails, many lakes for fishing and water sports, and numerous parks for picnicking and sightseeing.

East-central Washington has a humid continental climate. The area, however, has traits of a Mediterranean climate with warm, arid spells during the summer and a cold, somewhat snowy winter. Both summer and winter are the predominant seasons, as fall constitutes a rapid transition. On average, July and August are equally warm, and the coolest month is December. Due to the Cascade Mountains, this region is protected from weather patterns experienced in other parts of the Pacific Northwest. As a result of the modifying effect of the Cascade Mountains, this area also has less than half the rainfall of the western part of the state.
