Loon-Lake
is located in Stevens County in the foothills of the Selkirk Mountains in northeast Washington. It is an 1,100-acre lake approximately 30 miles north-northwest of Spokane. Loon Lake is about two miles wide and four miles long and has a maximum depth of 100 feet. A popular recreational spot, Loon Lake offers activities such as swimming, fishing, boating, kayaking, sailing, water skiing and jet-skiing. The shores are lined with several cabins, used primarily as weekend retreats and vacation cottages, but some are occupied year-round. Non-water related activities at Loon Lake include golf, hiking, mountain biking, farmer's markets and gaming at nearby casinos. An impromptu boat parade occurs every 4th of July, when lake residents and visitors decorate their boats and move in procession around the edge of the lake. A popular family-friendly resort is located on the shores of Loon Lake and offers many activities for old and young alike. The resort also features a boutique and gift shop, a restaurant with outdoor seating, an RV park and one or two-bedroom cabins. There is also a town of Loon Lake, Washington that lies immediately to the north of the lake.

East-central Washington has a humid continental climate. The area, however, has traits of a Mediterranean climate with warm, arid spells during the summer and a cold, somewhat snowy winter. Both summer and winter are the predominant seasons, as fall constitutes a rapid transition. On average, July and August are equally warm, and the coolest month is December. Due to the Cascade Mountains, this region is protected from weather patterns experienced in other parts of the Pacific Northwest. As a result of the modifying effect of the Cascade Mountains, this area also has less than half the rainfall of the western part of the state.
