Mount-Rainier
is an active volcano that towers over Pierce County, Washington in the Cascade Mountain Range. It is located about 54 miles southeast of Seattle. Mount Rainier is the most prominent mountain in the contiguous United States and the highest mountain in Washington and the Cascade Range. The mountain and the surrounding area are protected within the Mount Rainier National Park. The summit of Mount Rainier is topped by two volcanic craters, each over 1,000 feet in diameter with the larger east crater overlapping the west crater. The most recent recorded volcanic eruption was between 1820 and 1854. Although Mount Rainier is an active volcano, as of 2010, there was no evidence of an imminent eruption. However, an eruption could be devastating for all areas surrounding the volcano. Mountain climbing on Mount Rainier is difficult, involving traversing the largest glaciers in the U.S. south of Alaska. Most climbers require two to three days to reach the summit. Climbing teams demand experience in glacier travel, self-rescue, and wilderness travel. Mount Rainier National Park offers hiking, camping, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and back-country skiing. The National Park encompasses 368 square miles, including the mountain. It is one of the U.S.'s earliest National Parks and features old growth forest, waterfalls, wildflower meadows and more than 26 glaciers. The area of the park called Paradise is the most popular destination for visitors, home to the historic Paradise Inn, built in 1916. The National Park Service states that Paradise is "the snowiest place on Earth."
