Packwood
is a small town in Lewis County in southwestern Washington. It's located at the intersection of US Highway 12 and Gifford Pinchot National Forest Road 52 (also known as Skate Creek Road.) Packwood is considered the "Heart of Volcano Country," located centrally between Mt. Rainier National Park, Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, and Mt. Adams. The Tatoosh Wilderness, Goat Rocks Wilderness, and William O. Douglas Wilderness are to the north, southeast and northeast, respectively. The town of Packwood is in the upper Cowlitz Valley, downstream of the confluence of the Muddy and Clear Forks of the Cowlitz. The White Pass Ski Area is just 20 miles to the east of town. Packwood's remote location and charm attract visitors who are looking for a place to relax and unwind amid scenic natural beauty. Recreational opportunities abound, and include hiking, fishing, bird and wildlife watching, skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling and camping. Thousands of bargain hunters visit Packwoods Biannual Flea Markets, which are held during the Memorial Day and Labor Day holiday weekends. Vendors offer a wide range of items, from antiques to toys. Packwood is also home to several restaurants, local motels and an RV park.

Mount Rainer weather patterns are strongly influenced by the Pacific Ocean, elevation, and latitude. The climate is generally cool and rainy, with summer highs in the 60s and 70s. While July and August are the sunniest months of the year, rain is possible anytime, and very likely in spring, fall, and winter. The weather at Mt. Rainier is very changeable. Snow will remain at the 5,000 to 8,000 feet elevation well into mid-July. Visitors are advised to have extra clothing, rain gear, and a tent for protection against storms anytime of the year. Some of the greatest seasonal snowfalls and snow depths in the United States have been recorded on the slopes of Mt. Rainer.
