Stanwood
is located in northern Washington's Snohomish County. The population as of the 2000 census was 3,923 residents. Stanwood was settled in 1848 and officially incorporated in 1903. The town grew along the mouth of the Stillaguamish River, about one mile east of the Seattle-Montana Great Northern Railway tracks. East Stanwood, which was situated right along the tracks, was platted in 1906 and incorporated in 1922. The two towns consolidated in 1960. Stanwood has lots of businesses and services, while maintaining its' small town, rural atmosphere. It's the northernmost city in Snohomish county and the only community to serve Camano Island, a bedroom community west of Stanwood. The town of Stanwood offers a wide selection of restaurants, including American, Chinese, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Mexican and more. There are gift shops, antique stores, art galleries, a winery and local farms that sell fresh produce. Recreational activities in Stanwood include golf, hiking, boating, fishing, kayaking, swimming, camping, birdwatching, parks with playgrounds and a skateboard park.

Northwest Washington, near Olympic National Park, ,is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the east by the Hood Canal and on the north by the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and the Olympic Peninsula is anchored by the Olympic Mountains. The region is divided into three basic regions: the Pacific coastline, the Olympic Mountains and the temperate rainforest. No other place in the United States can match its diversity in terrain and weather in such a compact geographic area. Therefore, weather in this region is very difficult to define. The coastal areas have mild weather year round with low coastal fog. Mount Olympus receives a large amount of snow. The rainforest receives annual precipitation of about 150 inches, making this the wettest area in the continental U.S. (the island of Kauai in the state of Hawaii gets more rain.)
