Whidbey-Island
is one of nine islands located about 30 miles north of Seattle in the Puget Sound. Whidbey Island forms the northern boundary of Puget Sound and lies between the Olympic Peninsula and the I-5 corridor. It is the fifth largest island in the contiguous United States, and the largest island in the state of Washington. The population of the island is 58,211, with an estimated 29,000 of residents living in rural locations. The residents of the island are known as "Whidbey Islanders." There are a wide variety of things to do on Whidbey Island, including beachcombing, kayaking, sailing, whale-watching, fishing, birding, hiking, cycling, visiting museums, parks or farms on the island. The beaches of Whidbey Island are varied; some are wide and sandy, some are covered with cobblestones, some are covered with grey, weathered driftwood. Whidbey Island contains Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve, the first national historic reserve in the U.S., created in part to protect the area's rare and sensitive plants. Several state parks are also on the island, including Deception Pass State park (the most visited state park in Washington,) Joseph Whidbey State Park, Fort Ebey State Park, Fort Casey State Park, Possession Point State park and South Whidbey State park. The island also hosts many festivals and special events throughout the year. Just a few of them include the Loganberry Festival in July, Maxwelton Beach Fourth of July Parade and Fireworks Show, Whidbey Island Race Week (a week long sailing regatta every July,) the Island County Fair in August, Whidbey Island Kite Festival in September and Penn Cove Mussel Festival in March.

Northwest Washington , near the Puget Sound and San Juan Islands, has a fairly temperate climate. The temperature of the salt water surrounding the islands doesnft vary greatly throughout the seasons, so it helps cool the air surrounding the San Juan islands. Northwest Washington experiences frequent cloud cover, fog and drizzle. Misty morning will be followed by partial clearing and occasional showers. An umbrella always comes in handy. Evenings are usually warm with a light ocean breeze. Temperatures range from low 30s in winter to mid 80s in summer. Coastal conditions are generally much more harsh than those in the Puget Sound.
