Vancouver
lies on the north bank of the Columbia River, directly across from Portland, Oregon in southwestern Washington. As of July, 2009, the estimated population was 165,809. It is the fourth largest city in the state of Washington. The Pacific Coast is about 90 miles to the west of Vancouver, and the Cascade Mountain Range lies to the east. The incredible Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area is just 30 minutes to the east of the city. Vancouver successfully combines the excitement and opportunities of a large metropolis with abundant small-town charm. Starting in 1997, city officials made a decision to dedicate the next 15-20 years to revitalize a large portion of the downtown area. Much has already been completed and plans are underway for a Waterfront Redevelopment and a Columbia River crossing project that will include a new 12-lane bridge and transit along I-5 from Jantzen Beach to downtown. Vancouver contains a fine variety of architecture, from Victorian homes and Craftsmen bungalows to war-time tract houses and ranch-style homes. The city was named one of the National Register of Historic Places "Dozen Distinctive Destinations" for 2003. Other attractions include the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, 1848 Covington House, the Carnegie Library, the 1867 Slocum House and the Clark County Historical Museum. Vancouver also has a vibrant arts community and a popular 4th of July fireworks display on the grounds of the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. Special events include the Vancouver Wine and Jazz Festival, which takes place in late August, and the Sausage Fest in September.

The Northwest Region of Oregon, near the city of Portland, enjoys a year round mild climate, with much less rain than the stereotype cities of the rainy Pacific Northwest. On average, this region of the state receives less rainfall than that of Atlanta, Houston, Indianapolis or Seattle. That's not to say it never rains here - it receives an average of 36.3 inches per year, mostly in the winter and early spring. The Pacific Ocean is an influencing factor on the climate, which helps moderate temperatures year round. Rarely is there severe weather such as tornadoes or flooding. Hailstorms usually occur each year, but are generally light and cover small areas. The north coastal area receives the least amount of sunshine in the state.
