Kalama is a small city located in Cowlitz County in southwest Washington. As of the 2000 census, the population was 1,783 residents. Kalama was incorporated on November 29, 1871 and named after the nearby Kalama River. The town of Kalama was the northern terminus of a railroad ferry operated by the Northern Pacific Railway from Goble, Oregon. This was a critical link in the rail system between 1883 when the service began until 1909 when the major rail bridges in Portland were completed. Today, Kalama has a thriving downtown that consists of many original and renovated buildings containing antique shops, gift boutiques, a grocery store, and other businesses. Attractions in town include the "world's tallest totem pole" located at the Port of Kalama Marine Park. There are always exciting activities going on in town, from spring Chinook fishing to swimming, sailing, wind surfing, rafting and canoeing. Kalama is also home to an annual Blues Festival and a festive Christmas celebration. The town was recently made famous with the release of the "Twilight" movies. Kalama's high school parking lot and other areas were used in the filming of the movie. Interstate 5 runs directly through the town, making it very convenient for visitors.

Kalama Weather & Climate

Southwest Washington is classified as having a dry-summer subtropical climate, with certain key exceptions. High pressures east of the Cascade Range create something of a venturi effect, leading to cold east winds down the Columbia River Gorge. Unsheltered by the Willamette Valley, this region has seen colder temperatures, including "silver thaw" storms where freezing rain cakes limbs and power lines. Rainfall occurs frequently throughout the fall, winter, and spring, but ceases around the middle of June, with dry and warm weather lasting through September. Heavy snowfalls are infrequent and snow often falls and doesn't stick, with major snowstorms only occurring every 2-4 years. Periodic floods are possible.
