Washougal
is a small city located in Clark County in the southwest corner of the state of Washington. The estimated population in 2008 was 13,509. Washougal sits on the Washington side of the Columbia River, with its' lowlands and prairie. It is the hub for the west entrance to the spectacular Columbia River Gorge. Motorists who approach Washougal from the west on the Lewis & Clark Highway are treated to a majestic display of Mount Hood rising above the Cascade Mountains. Mount Hood is framed by the columnar cliffs that are the gateway to the Gorge and the great Columbia River. The town of Washougal is called the "Crossroads to Discovery," in the Pacific Northwest. The area was first explored by Captain Robert Gray, a Boston fur trader in 1792, and shortly thereafter, famed British explorer, George Vancouver traveled here to verify Gray's discovery. In 1805-1806, another important group of explorers visited the Washougal area, which marked the first cross-continental exploration - the famous Lewis & Clark expedition. Today Washougal is a peaceful, safe, clean and scenic environment. The Washougal River, which joins the Columbia River here, is known for its excellent fishing. Lacamas Lake Park offers boating, fishing, picnicking and hiking trails. The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, to the east, is also a popular tourist and wind surfing area.

Washougal Weather & Climate

The Northwest Region of Oregon, near the city of Portland, enjoys a year round mild climate, with much less rain than the stereotype cities of the rainy Pacific Northwest. On average, this region of the state receives less rainfall than that of Atlanta, Houston, Indianapolis or Seattle. That's not to say it never rains here - it receives an average of 36.3 inches per year, mostly in the winter and early spring. The Pacific Ocean is an influencing factor on the climate, which helps moderate temperatures year round. Rarely is there severe weather such as tornadoes or flooding. Hailstorms usually occur each year, but are generally light and cover small areas. The north coastal area receives the least amount of sunshine in the state.
