Anacortes
is a city in Skagit County located on Fidalgo Island with a population of around 16,300 as of 2007. Anacortes operates a Washington State Ferries dock that serves Lopez Island, Shaw Island, Orcas Island, and San Juan Island, as well as Victoria, British Columbia on Vancouver Island. Skagit County also operates a ferry dock that serves Guemes Island. Oil refining is the area's largest industry and two large refineries are near the town, one is owned and operated by Tesoro and the other is owned and operated by Shell Puget Sound Refinery Company. However, yacht construction and shipbuilding, tourism, and residential services for the nearby Whidbey Island Naval Air Station now form the economic base. Anacortes serves as a popular destination for boaters. Washington Park on Fidalgo Island offers camping, boat launching and views of the San Juan Islands. Anacortes Community Forest Lands consist of 2,800 acres with over 50 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. Rock climbing is popular on the cliffs of Mount Erie with an elevation of 1,273 feet. Each August, Anacortes holds the free Anacortes Arts Festival on main street allowing artisans, venders and merchants to sell their art. The Oyster Run is an annual motorcycle rally. The event started in 1981 and has grown to be the largest rally in the Pacific Northwest with an estimated count of 8,000 bikes.

Northwest Washington , near the Puget Sound and San Juan Islands, has a fairly temperate climate. The temperature of the salt water surrounding the islands doesnft vary greatly throughout the seasons, so it helps cool the air surrounding the San Juan islands. Northwest Washington experiences frequent cloud cover, fog and drizzle. Misty morning will be followed by partial clearing and occasional showers. An umbrella always comes in handy. Evenings are usually warm with a light ocean breeze. Temperatures range from low 30s in winter to mid 80s in summer. Coastal conditions are generally much more harsh than those in the Puget Sound.
