Harstine-Island is a large forested island near the town of Shelton in Mason County in northwest Washington. It is west of Case Inlet in the southern Puget Sound. There is also a small, unincorporated community with the same name located on the island. Harstine Island has a land mass of 18.651 square miles and a population of approximately 1,000 full-time residents. It offers peace and quiet and breathtaking views of the Puget Sound and the wildlife and birdlife in the area. A bridge dedication was held on Harstine Island on June 22, 1969. Prior to that, the island was served by a ferry that carried both passengers and cars to the island. Pickering Passage, to the northwest, separates the island from mainland, while Case Inlet, to the east, separates it from Key Peninsula. Squaxin Island lies to the southwest, separated by Peale Passage. To the south, Harstine Island is separated from the mainland by Dana Passage. The Harstine Island Community Hall was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. The island is also simply known as "Harstine," and is sometimes spelled "Harstene."

Harstine Island Weather & Climate

Northwest Washington , near the Puget Sound and San Juan Islands, has a fairly temperate climate. The temperature of the salt water surrounding the islands doesn�ft vary greatly throughout the seasons, so it helps cool the air surrounding the islands. Northwest Washington experiences frequent cloud cover, fog and drizzle. Misty morning will be followed by partial clearing and occasional showers. An umbrella always comes in handy. Evenings are usually warm with a light ocean breeze. Temperatures range from low 30s in winter to mid 80s in summer. Coastal conditions are generally much more harsh than those in the Puget Sound. �@
