Shelton is the county seat of Mason County in northwest Washington. It has the distinction of being the westernmost city on the Puget Sound. As of the 2000 census, the population was 8,442 residents. Shelton has a unique form of government in the state of Washington, being the only city in the state which still retains the commission form of government. The city of Shelton incorporated in 1890 and was once served by a small fleet of steamboats, which was part of the Puget Sound Mosquito Fleet. The town built its economy around logging, farming, dairy, ranching and oyster cultivation. The Simpson Timber Company Mill on Puget Sound's Oakland Bay still dominates the city's downtown area. Attractions in town include The Caboose Tourist Information Center and the Little Creek Casino. The whole Puget Sound region surrounding Shelton offers water recreation, historical sites, ferry rides, camping, hiking, unique shopping, and dining. Shelton also bills itself as the "Christmas Tree Capital" of the U.S. The Caboose Tourist Center offers information for all of Mason County.

Northwest Washington , near the Puget Sound and San Juan Islands, has a fairly temperate climate. The temperature of the salt water surrounding the islands doesn�ft vary greatly throughout the seasons, so it helps cool the air surrounding the islands. Northwest Washington experiences frequent cloud cover, fog and drizzle. Misty morning will be followed by partial clearing and occasional showers. An umbrella always comes in handy.
