Olympia is the capital of Washington and the major cultural center of the Puget Sound. Public parks abound in Olympia, including the Woodard Bay Natural Resources Conservation Area. This 600-acre park preserves more than five miles of Puget Sound waterfront along Henderson Inlet. Other parks include Percival Landing Park, which offers a boardwalk along Budd Inlet, a playground, picnic areas and a large open space. Olympia also features a loop trail of second-growth forest, a wildlife refuge just outside of town, skate parks, and the Capitol State Forest. The city of Olympia is also a center for fine arts, with a number of theatrical performances at the Capital Playhouse, Olympia Family Theater, and Olympia Little Theater. The Olympia Symphony Orchestra also performs five regular season concerts at the Washington Center. Downtown Olympia is a lively place with art galleries, murals and other public art installations, coffeehouses and restaurants, unique shops, and a nationally-recognized film festival. In April, to honor Earth Day, Olympia is host to one of the regions largest community celebrations - the Procession of the Species celebration. This is held in conjunction with the citys biannual Arts Walk, and structured around an annual Community Art Studio that is free and open to the public. In July 2009, Readers Digest Magazine honored the Procession of the Species with the top spot in its "can't resist" parades and processions list. The city of Olympia is also home to several special events. One of the most popular, the Annual Pet Parade, has been around for more than 80 years, and draws more than 1,000 children and their pets, with prizes given in several categories.
