Steilacoom is a historic town located in Pierce County in west-central Washington. As of the 2000 census, the population was 6,049 residents. It lies on the coast of Puget Sound. Incorporated in 1854, Steilacoom became the very first incorporated town in what is now Washington state. During the 1850s, it was one of only a few waterfront settlements along the Puget Sound in the American frontier. Early pioneers hoped Steilacoom would become the next San Francisco, and the town was very busy with trade and business in the early years. The early economy centered around loading ships with timber for San Francisco, which had a voracious hunger for building materials. Timber was plentiful and Steilacoom was, by far, a most impressive community back then. Steilacoom was the site of many firsts, aside from being the first incorporated town. It had the first brick building north of the Columbia River, the first jail in Pierce County, the first school, the first Protestant church building and the first lending library in Washington Territory. Today, Steilacoom maintains eleven city parks, open from dawn to dusk, that offer playground equipment, hiking, picnicking, ball fields and more. The town is host to several annual events, including a Salmon Bake, Apple Squeeze and a grand Fourth of July celebration.
