Port-Hadlock
is a census-designated place located in Jefferson County in northwest Washington. It is usually combined as Port Hadlock-Irondale for statistical purposes. As of the 2000 census, the population was 3,476. Samuel Hadlock, the founder, settled in the area in 1870. He contracted with the Washington Mill Company to build a sawmill on an arm of land off the Bay, on a low bank, but deep enough waters for tall ships to moor. Lumber from the mill was shipped to San Francisco, and as far away as Australia and Hawaii. On the waterfront near the mill was a general store, post office, barber shop, livery stable, laundry, two hotels and two saloons. Two of the old buildings remain today, the Northwest School of Wooden Boat Building, and the original residence of Samuel Hadlock, presently known as the Ajax Cafe. As part of Jefferson County, Port Hadlock lies within a geographically unusual area. The county is splint in three parts: Eastern Jefferson County along the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Admiralty Inlet and Puget Sound; Central Jefferson County, which is uninhabited and lies within the Olympic Mountains, Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest and Western Jefferson County, along the Pacific Ocean. Due to the mountainous barrier, there is no road lying entirely within Jefferson County that connects the eastern and western parts. The most direct route between the two ends of the county involves a drive of approximately 100 miles along U.S. Route 101 through neighboring Clallam County.

Port Hadlock Weather & Climate

Northwest Washington has summers that are cool and comparatively dry and winters are mild, wet and cloudy. During July and August, the driest months, it is not unusual for two to four weeks to pass with only a few showers; however, in December and January, the wettest months, precipitation is frequently recorded on 20 to 25 days or more each month. Snowfall is light in the lower elevations and heavy in the mountains. During the wet season, rainfall is usually light to moderate and continuous over a period of time rather than heavy downpours for brief periods. During the latter half of the summer and early fall, the lower valleys are sometimes filled with fog or low clouds until noon, while at the same time, the higher elevations are sunny.
