Skamokawa
is an unincorporated, rural village located in Wahkiakum County in southwest Washington. It lies on the banks of the Columbia River on WA Route 4. The community includes a general store, restaurant, post office and a historical museum and covered bridge. Skamokawa is a local center for kayaking and fishing. Wahkiakum County is the third smallest county in Washington and is very picturesque, though sparsely populated. As of the April, 2005 census, the population of the entire county was just 3,901 residents. The primary industries in the area are commercial fishing, canneries and logging. The Skamokawa region is surrounded by beautiful farmlands and forests, historical sites, antique shops and other attractions. Outdoor recreation includes fishing, hiking, camping, birding and wildlife viewing and sightseeing. There are many unique places to stay along the lower Columbia River including hotels, vacation rental homes, bed and breakfasts, as well as camping on the river. There are many other activities in the area, as well, including a farmer's market, crab feed, chili cook-off, Festival of Trees and Bald Eagle Days Festival in the town of Cathlamet near Rosburg.

Oregon's North Coast has the least sunshine of any area in the state but the gorgeous scenery more than makes up for the lack of sunshine. The northwest region is a heavily timbered area with lots of rainfall much of the year, resulting in lush pastures and rich farmland. Along the coast, the average annual snowfall is only one to three inches, with many years in which there is no measurable amount at all. Thunderstorms can occur in the valleys, but are usually not severe. Major flooding occurs in the coastal streams as a result of several days of moderate to heavy rain. Melting of a heavy snow pack on the Coast Range and/or the Cascades greatly increases the flood potential. The only other severe weather conditions on the Oregon coast are hailstorms, which are generally light and cover very small areas, and occasional high winds.
