Tacoma
is an urban port city, located on Washington's Puget Sound, about 32 miles southwest of Seattle and 31 miles northeast of Olympia. In 2009, the estimated population was 199,637. Tacoma has been named "one of the most livable areas in the country." Since the early 1990s, the city of Tacoma has revitalized its' downtown. The University of Washington established a branch there in 1990 and the same year the Union Station was restored. The Washington State History Museum opened in 1996 and the Museum of Glass, with its' iconic steel cone, opened in 2002. Other attractions in the city include the Tacoma Art Museum, America's Car Museum and beautiful glass and steel Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center. Downtown Tacoma also has a thriving theater district, anchored by the historic, 89-year-old Pantages Theater. For outdoor recreation, Tacoma is home to Point Defiance Park, one of the largest urban parks in the country at 700 acres. The park offers a "Scenic Five Mile Drive," which features Owen Beach, Camp Six, Fort Nisqually and the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. Ruston Way is a waterfront area in Tacoma that has several parks that are connected by a multi-use trail. Wapato Park is located in the south end of Tacoma and features a lake and walking trails that circle the lake. Wright Park, located near downtown, is an English-style park that contains Wright Park Arboretum and the W. W. Seymour Botanical Conservatory. Tacoma also has many buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including Engine House No. 9, a fire station built in 1907, and Fireboat No. 1, built in 1929 for the Port of Tacoma.

Northwest Washington , near the Puget Sound and San Juan Islands, has a fairly temperate climate. The temperature of the salt water surrounding the islands doesnft vary greatly throughout the seasons, so it helps cool the air surrounding the islands. Northwest Washington experiences frequent cloud cover, fog and drizzle. Misty morning will be followed by partial clearing and occasional showers. An umbrella always comes in handy. Evenings are usually warm with a light ocean breeze. Temperatures range from low 30s in winter to mid 80s in summer. Coastal conditions are generally much more harsh than those in the Puget Sound.
