Stevens-Pass
is a mountain pass on US Highway 2 through the Cascade Mountains, located at the border of King and Chelan Counties, Washington. The elevation at the pass is 4,061 feet, and a recreation area by the pass contains a ski resort. Also, the Pacific Crest Trail crosses US Highway 2 at Stevens Pass. The ski resort at Stevens Pass is on Cowboy Mountain and Big Chief Mountain and is considered one of the premier resorts in the Northwest. The resort offers 10 lifts, 1,125 acres of terrain on which to ski, 37 primary runs, and a base village surrounded by three day lodges. Stevens Pass also offers many choices for dining - from full service to fast food. Shopping is also available in a wide variety of specialty shops and boutiques. There is also the 105-mile Stevens Pass scenic byway that runs through the rugged, forested Cascade Mountains beside the "wild and scenic" Skykomish and Wenatchee Rivers. Year-round outdoor recreational activities include whitewater rafting, hiking, mountain biking and sightseeing. Travelers over the pass are advised to carry tire chains as weather conditions are subject to sudden change during snow season. As a historical note: on February 23, 1910, two Great Northern Railway trains stalled on the tracks at Stevens Pass because of a heavy snow storm and avalanches. Six days later, another avalanche pushed both trains 150 feet down into the Tye River Valley, thus burying the train cars in snow and debris. The disaster killed 96 people, which made it one of the worst train disasters in U.S. railway history.
