Index is a tiny town in Snohomish County in northwest Washington. As of the 2000 census, the population was 157 permanent residents. Index has a quiet, rustic setting and is known for its hiking, rock climbing and other outdoor adventures in the beautiful Cascades. Climbers and hikers come to the little town of Index, making their way to the trailheads surrounding the cliffs and mountains. Prior to settlement by westerners, the Skykomish Indians lived in the area between Sultan and Index. Fishing the Skykomish River was an important part of their economy. Logging and lumber booms in the latter half of the 1800s lead to the growth of the settlement and a gold strike in 1889 at nearby Monte Cristo fueled another influx of settlers. The town is named for nearby Mount Index. The 500-foot cliffs, known as the Index Town Wall, are popular with rock climbers and they feature some of the most challenging climbing in the state of Washington. The town is also home to the Picket Index Historical Museum that features mining, logging and information on the area's natural disasters. There are a few inns and bed and breakfasts in and around the town of Index.

Index Weather & Climate

Northwest Washington, near Olympic National Park, ,is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the east by the Hood Canal and on the north by the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and the Olympic Peninsula is anchored by the Olympic Mountains. The region is divided into three basic regions: the Pacific coastline, the Olympic Mountains and the temperate rainforest. No other place in the United States can match its diversity in terrain and weather in such a compact geographic area. Therefore, weather in this region is very difficult to define. The coastal areas have mild weather year round with low fog. Mount Olympus receives a large amount of snow. The rainforest receives annual precipitation of about 150 inches, making this the wettest area in the continental U.S. (the island of Kauai in the state of Hawaii gets more rain.)
