Skykomish
is a peaceful village located in King County in west-central Washington. The population was 214 as of the 2000 census. The town is situated on the Skykomish River near Deception Falls in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Skykomish was founded as a railroad town and incorporated in 1909. Prior to that, however, the area was inhabited by the Skai-whamish tribe (a subdivision of the Snoqualmies.) At its peak, the town of Skykomish had a population of several thousand. Gold, silver and copper miners added to the railroaders and loggers. Many of the original buildings of the boom days still exist and appear much the way they did long ago. Today, Skykomish is primarily a stopping point for recreational access to the surrounding mountains and skiing at Stevens Pass. With its location in the far northeastern corner of King County, the town serves as the gateway to the Alpine Lakes Wilderness area. There are numerous hiking trails in the area, and abandoned logging roads that make great mountain biking, four-wheeling and snowmobiling roads. Each summer, thousands of rafters and kayakers come through the town to the Skykomish River, which is considered one of the premier whitewater rivers in the country.

Northwest Washington, near Olympic National Park, ,is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the east by the Hood Canal and on the north by the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and the Olympic Peninsula is anchored by the Olympic Mountains. The region is divided into three basic regions: the Pacific coastline, the Olympic Mountains and the temperate rainforest. No other place in the United States can match its diversity in terrain and weather in such a compact geographic area. Therefore, weather in this region is very difficult to define. The coastal areas have mild weather year round with low fog. Mount Olympus receives a large amount of snow. The rainforest receives annual precipitation of about 150 inches, making this the wettest area in the continental U.S. (the island of Kauai in the state of Hawaii gets more rain.)
