San-Juan-Islands
are part of the San Juan Archipelago, located in the northwest corner of the United States in the Salish Sea. The archipelago is split into two groups of islands based on the national sovereignty. The San Juan Islands are part of the U.S. state of Washington, while the Gulf Islands are part of Canada's province of British Columbia. There are over 450 islands in the entire archipelago, but fewer than one-sixth are permanently inhabited. Public ferries serve nine Gulf Islands and six San Juan Islands. You can fly directly from Seattle to the San Juan Islands in about 30-45 minutes on an airplane or seaplane. Orcas Island is the largest of the San Juan Islands. The islands are a big tourist destination, with whale-watching and sea kayaking two of the most popular activities. Each of the islands has a character of its own, both in terms of geography and lifestyle. Orcas Island is a horseshoe-shaped island that is a mix of lush forest, farm valleys, lakes and stunning mountains, all wrapped around a beautiful fjord. Lopez Island is a bicyclists dream with its' rolling farmlands with shimmering water vistas. WhileSan Juan Island combines rocky shores and sandy beaches, prairie and pastureland, lakes and forests.

Northwest Washington , near the Puget Sound and San Juan Islands, has a fairly temperate climate. The temperature of the salt water surrounding the islands doesnft vary greatly throughout the seasons, so it helps cool the air surrounding the San Juan islands. Northwest Washington experiences frequent cloud cover, fog and drizzle. Misty morning will be followed by partial clearing and occasional showers. An umbrella always comes in handy. Evenings are usually warm with a light ocean breeze. Temperatures range from low 30s in winter to mid 80s in summer. Coastal conditions are generally much more harsh than those in the Puget Sound.
