Orcas-Island
is the largest of the San Juan Islands, located in the northwestern corner of Washington. Orcas Island is accessible only by air or water via a ferry route serving the islands from a terminal at Anacortes, Washington. During the summer season, there is an island shuttle that runs from the ferry landing to Eastsound and other points. Orcas Island is a joy for those who love nature. The horseshoe-shaped island is a mix of lush forest, farmland, peaceful lakes and mountains, surrounded by a beautiful fjord. Various species of birds are found here, along with deer, otters, eagles, whales that breach on the islands and many species of fish. Orcas Island is mostly a rural island with several quaint villages, each unique in its own way. Outdoor recreational opportunities abound on the Orcas. Moran State Park features several lakes and miles of ocean shoreline with both public and private beaches. Miles of hiking trails are also found in the state park. Surrounding land masses offer the San Juans protection from harsh weather, so the islands enjoy a year round climate that is more moderate than other locations in the Pacific Northwest. Orcas Island is also a photographer's dream with its' forested mountains, green, rolling pastures and spectacular shoreline. Frommer's has named Orcas Island "Most Beautiful" of all the Pacific Northwest's San Juan Islands.

Northwest Washington , near the Puget Sound and San Juan Islands, has a fairly temperate climate. The temperature of the salt water surrounding the islands doesnft vary greatly throughout the seasons, so it helps cool the air surrounding the San Juan islands. Northwest Washington experiences frequent cloud cover, fog and drizzle. Misty morning will be followed by partial clearing and occasional showers. An umbrella always comes in handy. Evenings are usually warm with a light ocean breeze. Temperatures range from low 30s in winter to mid 80s in summer. Coastal conditions are generally much more harsh than those in the Puget Sound.
