Bellingham is the largest city in Whatcom County and the eleventh largest city in the state of Washington. The city is located on Bellingham Bay and is west of Mount Baker and Lake Whatcom and north of the Chuckanut Mountains and Skagit Valley. Whatcom Creek runs through the center of the city. Bellingham has an estimated population of 75,150. Bellingham is home to a host of cultural and recreational activities. Among these is the Ski to Sea Race, a Bellingham tradition, which is a team relay race consisting of cross country skiing, running, road biking, canoeing, mountain biking, and kayaking. Starting at the Mount Baker Ski Area, the racers make their way down to the finish on Bellingham Bay. The Ski to Sea Race draws thousands of people from around the Pacific Northwest and generates over $5 million for the local economy. The Bellingham Festival of Music draws world-class musicians from North America's top orchestral ensembles. The Bellingham Farmers Market, open from April to October, has a long standing tradition that "on opening day a cabbage is thrown by a city official to a long standing vender." The American Museum of Radio and Electricity features a collection of artifacts from 1580 into the 1950s. Other attractions include Whatcom Falls Park, a 241 acre park consisting of waterfalls and several miles of hiking trails and the Bellingham Railway Museum displaying railroading history in Whatcom County, model trains and a freight train simulator.

Bellingham Weather & Climate

Northwest Washington , between Semiahmoo Bay and Lumnai Bay, there is a body of water called Birch Bay. The climate in this area is temperate and greatly influenced by the Pacific Ocean. It's generally mild, often referred to as "The Banana Belt of the Northwest." Although the rainy season can last as long as eight months, it is usually about six months long, leaving the area with a late spring and mild, pleasant summer. Many long weeks of short and cloudy days are commonplace in winter. Summers are quite dry however. This region is occasionally subject to unusual and harsh weather due to an upper level trough that drives down cold Arctic air from the Canadian interior. This cold air mass can collide with a Gulf of Alaska cold front and create high winds, ice, snow, or heavy rains.
