Leavenworth
is a small city located in Chelan County in central Washington. As of the 2000 census, the population was 2,074 residents. Nestled in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, the alpine village of Leavenworth offers a taste of Bavaria and Bavarian architecture, delicious bratwurst and other German specialties. However, Leavenworth's history began with the Yakima, Chinook and Wenatchi Indian Tribes. The Native American tribes lived by hunting the land for deer and elk, as well as fishing Icicle Creek for salmon. Surrounded by some of the most beautiful and bountiful lands in North America, the three tribes co-existed from Lake Wenatchee to the Icicle and beyond. The area was soon settled by pioneers in search of gold, furs and fertile farmland, however, and by 1890, a town had formed and was called "Icicle Flats." The railroad brought more opportunities and the town thrived until a re-routing of the railroad forced the closure of the town's sawmill. In the 1960s, town leaders switched their focus to tourism. Today, with a completely renovated downtown area, Leavenworth offers a variety of accommodations, specialty shops and galleries, restaurants and spas. Using the surrounding alpine mountains as a backdrop, the town was transformed into a Bavarian village. Several festivals are held in Leavenworth each year also, including the Autumn Leaf Festival, Maifest and the popular Christmas Lighting Ceremony.

Central Washington , in the heart of the Cascades, has a temperate climate of mild summers and snowy winters. An average winter snowfall ranges from 50 to 75 inches in lower elevations. Snowfall gradually increases to between 400 to 600 inches above 4,000 feet. Some high peaks above 7,000 feet remain snowcapped all year. Snowfall usually begins in the higher elevations in September, gradually working down to 3,000 feet by the last of October. Above 4,000 feet temperatures occasionally drop below freezing even in midsummer. The temperature decreases approximately 3 degrees with each 1,000 feet increase in elevation. Mild, humid, summer days, temps rarely rise above 79 degrees F.
