Vashon-Island
is the largest island in Puget Sound south of Admiralty Inlet. As of the 2000 census, the population was 10,123. There is a community named Vashon that covers the entire island, which is alternately called Vashon Island or Vashon-Maury Island. The whole island is 37 square miles in size, which is about 60 percent larger in area than Manhattan, but has only 1/150 the population. Adding to the island's rural atmosphere and isolation is the fact that there are no bridges that connect it to the mainland. The southern terminus of the Vashon Highway is the Tahlequah Ferry Terminal, connected to the Point Defiance neighborhood of Tacoma by a Washington State Ferries run. The northern terminus of the Vashon Highway is the Heights Dock at Point Vashon, which services the state ferry docks at Southworth, Fauntleroy in West Seattle, and downtown Seattle. Various spots on Vashon Island provide spectacular views of the Puget Sound and neighboring islands. The main street of town on Vashon is lined with quaint shops, restaurants and art galleries, with a gallery tour the first Friday of each month. Other things to do include touring the historic Point Robinson Lighthouse. Narrated live by Pt. Robinson light keepers, the tours are available on Sundays, May through September. There are also cottages for rent and bed and breakfasts located on the island, and a Saturday farmer's market is open May through Fall on the Village Green.

Northwest Washington , near the Puget Sound and San Juan Islands, has a fairly temperate climate. The temperature of the salt water surrounding the islands doesnft vary greatly throughout the seasons, so it helps cool the air surrounding the islands. Northwest Washington experiences frequent cloud cover, fog and drizzle. Misty morning will be followed by partial clearing and occasional showers. An umbrella always comes in handy. Evenings are usually warm with a light ocean breeze. Temperatures range from low 30s in winter to mid 80s in summer. Coastal conditions are generally much more harsh than those in the Puget Sound.
